New Cold War Tech Tree – French Tanks

Research the republic’s best and get to know your latest Tech Tree line leading up to the Leclerc Series 1.

The Western Alliance welcomes a new nation to its Tech Tree ranks: France.

Starting with the Post-War Era, you'll have two fast, lightly armored mediums equipped with autoloaders. Support your team and eliminate the enemy with their powerful burst damage while using their mobility to relocate and keep the pressure where needed. The last vehicle in this Era transitions you to the single-gun playstyle that the succeeding tanks will use.

The tanks from Escalation through most of the Détente Era have a similar playstyle; they’re fast, lightly armored medium tanks equipped with a secondary 20mm chain gun. Each vehicle continues to progressively become more powerful as you make your way up to the last tank in this line: the Leclerc Series 1. Unlike its predecessor, the Leclerc is a heavy tank with well-sloped armor (along with composite armor) and provides excellent protection, especially against ATGMs.

Tasked with developing a lower-weight alternative to the AMX 50 heavy tank, France’s Lorraine company produced the Lorraine 40t in 1952. This 40-tonne medium tank featured an oscillating turret, a 100mm gun similar to the AMX 50’s, a drum autoloader, and pneumatic tires. Two prototypes were tested in 1953 and 1954, but the tank never entered mass production.

Developed as part of a competitive search for a unified European tank, the vehicle turned out to have maneuverability, engine power, and effective anti-tank engagement distance superior to all other vehicles except the Leopard 1. The armor of the vehicle was quite thin, but it was decided that technological advances in anti-tank shells had essentially rendered armor obsolete, so survivability depended on mobility and firepower, not protection.

Developed in 1966, the AMX 30 was maneuverable and had good engine power and an excellent anti-tank engagement range. Its great view range allowed the commander to coordinate the crew's actions and maintain situational awareness, which greatly increased the vehicle's overall effectiveness. The armor was thin, but it was decided that technological advancements in anti-tank shells had essentially rendered armor obsolete. Doctrine asserted that survivability was a function of mobility and firepower. A total of 2,800 vehicles were manufactured.

In the early post-war period, as the Western European countries cautiously moved towards the rearmament of Germany and Italy in the face of a growing perceived threat from the Soviet Union, the impetus for a single, jointly developed European tank was increasing. As the process proceeded, it became apparent that each European country had vastly different doctrines and requirements, and many of the joint projects fragmented into specific national ones. The French Main Battle Tank program, which had at first been part of a French-German-Italian effort, eventually evolved into the AMX-30 program. The AMX 30 featured a 105 mm Modèle F1 gun, a field-swappable Hispano-Suiza 680 hp engine, night vision, and river fording. The first production model rolled off the line in 1966, designated the AMX 30B. In 1982, the AMX 30B2, an updated version with Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) rounds, improved fire control system, laser rangefinder, low light capability, and updated transmission, was introduced. The 20 mm coaxial gun is able to elevate up to 40 degrees to engage air threats. The AMX-30 was adopted by nations that saw it as a cheaper alternative to the Leopard 1, including Greece, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Chile, and Cyprus.

In the mid-1990s, GIAT developed an upgrade package known as “BRENUS” for the AMX 30 B2. It consisted of 112 bricks of explosive reactive armor (ERA) to be fitted on the turret and the front of the hull. The upgrade was provided to the 1er/ 2e Chasseurs tank regiments in France’s “rapid reaction force.”

Developed in 1975, the AMX 32 was intended as an affordable export variant of the AMX 30 main battle tank. Its turret could be fitted with either the 105 mm rifled gun of its predecessor (which was the choice for early AMX 32 units) or a 120 mm smoothbore gun. Later models also featured the Hispano-Suiza HS 110-S2 engine, capable of delivering up to 800 hp. Unfortunately, no units were ordered, and France ultimately chose to pursue development of the AMX 40 instead.

The AMX 40 began as an export version of the AMX 30B2, designated the AMX 32, which featured spaced armor to defeat anti-tank guided missiles. Due to lackluster sales, the AMX 32 was redesigned and fitted with the more modern 120 mm GIAT smoothbore cannon. The prototype was completed in 1983. The AMX 40 was intended to be a low-cost tank purely for export, but it failed to attract enough customers, and subsequently, the project was canceled in 1990, with only a handful produced.

After the failure of a joint effort between France and Germany to design a new main battle tank, France undertook the initiative that eventually produced the Leclerc. Plans for the Leclerc included several advanced features, including modular composite armor, thermal profile reduction, an autoloader, and a 120 mm smoothbore gun designed for increased muzzle velocity. The vehicle entered service in 1992, with the T3 series considered the beginning of its official production run. It remains in service today with the armies of France and the United Arab Emirates.
