Tank origin
Designed to serve alongside BMP-1 vehicles as opposed to replacing them, the BMP-2 nevertheless incorporated several improvements over its predecessor. The commander’s position was relocated from behind the driver to a seat beside the gunner in the turret for an improved view. Additionally, the BMP-1’s 73mm gun was traded for a 30mm automatic gun capable of increased accuracy, two rates of fire, and elevation up to +74 degrees. The BMP-2 was unveiled to the public during a parade in Moscow’s Red Square in 1982.
