Tank origin
The Soviet PT-76 entered service in 1951. Designed for armed reconnaissance and also used for transport, it was an amphibious light tank that featured a boat-shaped hull with thin welded steel armor that enabled floatation. The PT-76 had space for a three-person crew, with the commander also operating the gun and radio. Despite its age, the PT-76 remains in service with some nations today, with about 12,000 units (including variants) having been built throughout its lifetime.
