Tank origin
Development of the Centurion tank line began in 1943. Designed as a "universal tank" to replace existing infantry and cruiser tanks, the Centurion Mk. II entered service in 1947. A total of 100 Centurion Mk. II vehicles were manufactured between 1945 and 1946, before production shifted to upgraded versions that would see battle through the 1980s.
