Tank origin
Although the Merkava Mk. 3 variant that was introduced in 1989 retained the basic front-engine layout of its predecessors, it featured several notable updates that distinguished it from previous marks. Chief among them was the Israeli-made 120mm gun with thermal sleeve that replaced the 105mm gun. The Merkava Mk. 3 also featured a new suspension, a new transmission, and a modular armor system.
