Tank origin
Through the Military Assistance Program (MAP) established after World War II, Norway received a number of M24 Chaffee tanks from the U.S. The tanks met Norway’s military needs for several years, but by the 1970s, the increased strength of Soviet vehicles moved Norway to update its fleet. The M24’s 75mm gun was replaced with the French 90mm D/925, and the gas engine was upgraded to a 6V-53T diesel engine. These plus other updates produced the NM-116, which Norway used into the 1990s.
