Tank origin
Not long after the Centurion Mk. 5 entered service in the mid-1950s, it was selected as the basis for another project from the British Army’s Royal Engineers. The Centurion Mk. 5 AVRE (“Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers”) merged the Mk. 5’s chassis with a 165mm L9A1 Demolition Gun and equipment such as the dozer blade standard on AVRE designs. It remained in service through the early 1990s and the Gulf War.
