Tank origin
After the Division Air Defense program was canceled in 1985, the U.S. Army explored other possible systems to use as anti-aircraft measures. One option it tested was the Air Defense Anti-Tank System (ADATS), developed by Oerlikon throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Although Canada, an early customer for the ADATS, had installed the system on the M113 chassis, the U.S. elected to test the ADATS on the chassis of the Bradley IFV (and add a 25mm autocannon). Trials were promising, but shifting budgetary priorities after the end of the Cold War led to the project’s termination.
