Tank origin
By the 1970s, the U.S. Army realized that its existing anti-aircraft guns would not be able to provide adequate support for its other planned armored vehicles. In 1977, it established the Division Air Defense (DIVAD) program and invited industry firms to submit designs for novel anti-aircraft measures. General Electric’s entry proposed fitting an M48 Patton with the GAU-8 Avenger, a 30mm Gatling-style gun with seven barrels, best known as the weapon system on the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft. The entry was not selected for further development.
