Eighty years ago this week—on April 16th, 1945—Soviet forces led by Marshal Georgi Zhukov began an assault on the German town of Seelow. The goal: break through German defenses and secure control of Berlin by April 22nd, Lenin’s birthday.
The elevated terrain of the Seelow Heights complicated Zhukov’s initial plans. However, by April 19th, his forces had succeeded in breaching the eastern German front. The Soviet military then proceeded on to Berlin, helping to clear the way for what would become V-E Day and the end of World War II in Europe.
