Father's Day, in the U.S., has its roots in West Virginia. In December 1907, the Monogah Mining Disaster occurred—a tragedy that killed 362 men and left more than 1,000 children fatherless. After the incident, Grace Golden Clayton suggested the idea of having a day honoring those fathers who died. And on July 5th, 1908, the community gathered to honor the men lost in the mine with a sermon at their church. However, it wasn’t until 1910, thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, that the U.S. celebrated its first Father’s Day in Dodd’s native state of Washington. The day was honored again in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson and in 1924 when it was observed around the country at the request of President Coolidge.
