The T-80 line arrives on August 27th, bringing you eight new Eastern Alliance vehicles that are packed with power.
Your Cold War matches are about to get heavier. Please welcome the T-80 line of heavy tanks to the Eastern Alliance Tech Tree!
Branching off from the T-44A starter vehicle, these tanks offer greater speed and a higher power-to-weight ratio for more mobility compared to the T-72 line of Soviet heavies, specifically in Eras 2 and 3. But don’t worry; all eight tanks still offer substantial armor protection, plus the formidable guns that Soviet heavy tanks are known for.
In fact, starting with the T-80B in the Escalation Era, you’ll have the option of firing either shells or missile ammo from your tank’s main gun (barrel-fired missiles) for an extra bit of boom in your matches.

The 122mm rifled gun on the IS-2 provided the Soviet army with plenty of firepower toward the end of the World War II. As a result, it was retained and incorporated into the design of its successor, the IS-3. The IS-3 was built with 200mm front armor, which evolved around the same time as the design of the T-34 and offered superior protection over the IS-2's armor. Although production ceased in 1946, the IS-3 remained in service with the Soviet army through the 1970s.

Around the same time that the IS-3 was being developed, the Design Bureau of the Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant was working on another upgrade to the IS-2: Object 701, later known as the IS-4. The IS-4 kept the IS-2's 122mm rifled gun. Compared to the IS-3, it had a longer hull fitted with an extra set of road wheels, thicker armor on the hull's sides, and a more powerful 690-hp engine. The low mobility of the IS-4 led to fewer than 300 units being produced, none of which saw battle during the Cold War.

The last vehicle in the IS line, the IS-10 was renamed the T-10 after Stalin’s death and accepted into service in 1953. The role of this large tank, which featured a 122mm gun, was to provide long-range fire support for T54/55 vehicles. The T-10B variant was introduced in 1957, offering two-plane gun stabilization and improved sighting. The T-10 and its variants remained in use until 1997.

Originally known in its prototype form as Object 219, the T-80 was a redesign of the T-64. The major new feature of the T-80 was its gas turbine engine, the GTD 1000, which made it the first Soviet-produced tank to be fitted with such an engine. Despite its power, the GTD 1000’s fuel consumption, coupled with the increased manufacturing costs of the T-80’s reconfigured hull, led Soviet engineers to develop a new design soon after the tank entered service in 1976.

The T-80BV was a version of the T-80B that entered service with Soviet forces in 1985. This version was outfitted with first-generation Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor (ERA), likely as a response to ammunition used by U.S. forces. Like the T-80B, the T-80BV was capable of launching AT-8/Songster anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM).

Building on the strengths of the T-80B, the T-80U integrates Kontakt-5 armor—a direct response to the continued development of Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) ammunition in the west. Additional armor was also added to the turret. Improving on the reliability of the M112-1 ATGM, the T-80U is equipped with the laser-guided 9M119 ATGM. The T-80U also includes a significant upgrade to the fire control systems of the T-80B.

Object 640, also known as “Black Eagle,” was a tank design shrouded in secrecy. Mockups were revealed at two separate demonstrations in 1997 and 1999, but were shown far away from spectators. What people saw were prototypes with a low profile, a large turret, and a hull similar to that of the T-80U. According to reports, both prototypes mounted a 125mm smoothbore gun, but the design could have accommodated a 152mm main gun. However, no version of the Black Eagle went into production; the engineering firm behind the tank declared bankruptcy in 2002.
